The FBI has thwarted an ISIS-inspired terrorist attack targeting the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, arresting Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, an 18-year-old American-born son of Somali parents, who prosecutors say planned to enter the shopping mall armed with an AK-47 and massacre between 30 and 60 people on October 24.
According to federal investigators, Mohamud pledged allegiance to ISIS, expressed his desire to murder non-Muslims and selected the date to coincide with a Hmong Arts Celebration attended by Asian families, while also claiming he wanted to target the mall because he believed it was Jewish-owned.
The FBI had monitored Mohamud since December 2024, when he expressed interest in joining the Islamist terrorist group al-Shabaab in Somalia, before shifting to a domestic massacre because he lacked the money to travel abroad; investigators say he also admired the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando, the New Orleans terrorist attack and the Bondi Beach shooting in Australia.
On October 6, undercover FBI agents posing as ISIS operatives sold him a disabled AK-47, four 30-round magazines and approximately 200 rounds of ammunition for $600 before arresting him in Richfield.
