30+ driverless Waymo’s were stranded across multiple lanes in Downtown Los Angeles after an issue at one of the company’s docking and charging facilities Saturday morning. Around 4:00 AM, a technical issue temporarily prevented Waymo vehicles from entering the Garland Center parking garage on W. 8th Street between Garland Avenue and S. Bixel Street, where the vehicles are typically cleaned, charged, and staged between trips. As many as 40 Waymos could be seen lined up, blocking portions of Bixel Street and W. 8th Street. At times, traffic was forced into opposing lanes to get around the backup, creating significant congestion despite the early morning hours. The issue appeared to resolve itself after about an hour, with the queue eventually clearing and operations returning to normal. No crashes or major incidents were reported, though most of the Waymos remained stopped with their hazard lights and brake lights illuminated while waiting to enter the facility.
