Update: Cybersecurity Incident There are multiple claims circulating regarding ATF’s recent acknowledgment of a cyber incident. While we continue to investigate in coordination with our law enforcement partners, I want to clarify that the system involved was the ATF CALEA system, a standalone system used by ATF in connection with the federal Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). For those unfamiliar with CALEA, it is a federal law that establishes requirements and processes related to how law enforcement agencies carry out certain authorized activities involving telecommunications and electronic communications. The CALEA system was standalone and separate from ATF’s other systems and networks. We will provide additional information as appropriate due to ongoing investigations. Thank you again.
