Kamala Harris posted today on the 63rd anniversary of the March on Washington, the day Dr. King spoke at the Lincoln Memorial, and claimed the right to vote is “yet again under attack.” She is pointing at the wrong target. The right to vote is not threatened by asking a voter to prove they are a citizen. It is not threatened by cleaning dead people and noncitizens off the rolls. It is not threatened by requiring an ID the way you already do to fly, drive, or cash a check. What actually weakens the vote is a party that treats those basics as an assault on democracy. Harris spent years selling that story. Then she wrapped it in King’s anniversary and hoped the date would do the work her argument cannot. Americans who are eligible should vote. People who are not citizens should not. That is not an attack on the franchise. That is the franchise. If she wants a fight over voting power, start with the simple rule she will not say out loud: only citizens vote.
