Beijing only need a verbal promise, "not to interfere in taiwan affairs", even if they later went back on it and insisted on interfering, it would have been fine. Beijing had prepared a whole pile of gifts: astronomical orders, solving the US debt problem, resolving the strait of Hormuz issue, and handling the midterm election problem. too bad none of those gifts could be delivered.
