Speculative traders are turning bullish on the Japanese Yen: Net long speculative positioning in the Japanese Yen jumped to +10,796 contracts in the week ending September 8th, the highest in 6 months. This positioning reflects investors such as hedge funds, asset managers, CTAs, and other money managers that take positions based on price trends and macro views rather than hedging needs. This marks a sharp reversal from net short positioning of -92,227 contracts in the prior week. By comparison, in the week ending August 2nd, net short positioning peaked at -163,412 contracts. This comes as investors are increasingly betting on the Bank of Japan hiking rates which could also encourage domestic investors to bring money back home. Meanwhile, the unwinding of Yen-funded carry trades could provide further support for the currency. The Japanese Yen is undergoing a major shift in sentiment.
