What strikes me about Chand Baori isn’t just the sheer number of steps it’s how precisely they turn water conservation into architecture. Around 3,500 narrow steps descend in a geometric pattern, creating an inverted pyramid that reaches roughly 30 metres below ground. But the geometry had a practical purpose: reaching and storing water in Rajasthan’s arid climate, while the lower levels stayed cooler. Built around the 9th century at Abhaneri, it’s a good reminder that some of the most beautiful architecture began with a very practical problem: how to live with water.
