Even the people closest to a breakthrough can underestimate it. In 1901, Wilbur Wright recalled telling his brother Orville that humans would not fly for 50 years. Two years later, the brothers made the first successful powered, controlled flights.
Wilbur said that being so wrong gave him “such a shock” that he thereafter distrusted himself and avoided making predictions.
