The project was announced in June 2025 and led by Stig Asmussen, director of God of War 3 and the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order series. Asmussen had assembled a team of veterans from his previous projects at Respawn and EA. According to Bloomberg, the cancellation is part of a larger reorganisation at Wizards of the Coast, which also included the earlier closure of the internal studio Atomic Arcade. Hasbro has stated that it remains open to new project pitches from Giant Skull.
