Knockoutchat was created by former Facepunch moderators and community members after Newman shut down the official Facepunch Forums in 2019 because they had become expensive to moderate and increasingly toxic. The ban happened after some users asked Newman to publicly distance himself from comments and opinions associated with certain coworkers or friends. He declined, and several moderators then issued permanent bans one after another.
