Men get 63% longer federal sentences than women for the SAME crimes and the SAME records. This gender gap is 5x larger than the racial gap that gets all the hearings, task forces, and endless media coverage. Sonja Starr at Michigan documented it in 2012 showing that the median time is 41 months for men versus 27 for women across violent, drug, and property cases. 70% of the difference comes from judges simply departing downward from the guidelines with no oversight. Women are also 2x as likely to walk with no prison at all. The numbers have been public for 35 years and no administration has ever proposed closing it. The Sentencing Commission has printed the same gap in every report since 1991. Never a formal response from the DOJ.
