Duarte Santos, president of Portuguese club Andorinha, based on the island of Madeira:
“It’s a sad day for Portuguese football, a sad day for world football, and a sad day for us Portuguese people.
Considering the way Ronaldo left the national team.
In short, they set a trap for him and got him into trouble, and he really didn’t deserve that.
If they had no intention of relying on Ronaldo, they should have, being mature people, made that clear before announcing the squad.
Things never needed to go this far; to exclude the best player in the world, the best player at the moment, and the best Portuguese player.
It’s not simply a matter of patience; it’s the nature of a footballer’s career. Everyone who works in this field, whether coach or player, understands that this will happen sooner or later.
The whole process was illogical and disrespectful, and he didn’t deserve to be treated that way.
Ronaldo remains Ronaldo, and he always will. Even after 100 years, Ronaldo will still be Ronaldo.
We will always love him, and children will love him too.
Here, no one would ever do that to him. If he ever comes back one day, we will celebrate him, embrace him, and give him all our support, because he truly deserves it.”
