Watching this made me furious. Not the mild “ugh that’s sad” kind of mad — the deep, sick-to-my-stomach, how-is-this-still-allowed kind of mad. People living with dementia are already losing pieces of themselves every single day. The absolute least we can do is make sure the places and people entrusted with their care treat them like human beings. And yet here we are, hearing the horror stories of neglect, indifference, and “that’s just how it is.” This lady describes the conditions her 90 year old grandmother lives in. She and other family have found her oxygen tanks turned off, her food sitting there (she cannot feed herself), and no water. DO BETTER is not a suggestion. It’s the bare minimum. If this video doesn’t make you angry, check your pulse. We are failing the most vulnerable people in our society and pretending it’s complicated. It’s not complicated. It’s a choice.
