Jeffrey Katzenberg isn't picking a side in the AI debate — he's picking a fight over compensation. The former DreamWorks CEO published a lengthy essay on X making the case that Hollywood's instinct to resist AI is repeating a mistake creative industries have made before. He points to composer John Philip Sousa's fight against the phonograph and the musicians who lost their jobs when sound came to film — both moments where the technology won, but the terms of that win were negotiated after the fact and eventually pushed innovation further. "The pushback coming out of Hollywood represents the collective effort of people who are deeply passionate about their craft." — Katzenberg His ask now: build AI tools with artists, not on top of them, with credit, consent, and pay built in from the start.
