This is the book that completely changed my worldview. How to Lie with Statistics by Darrell Huff made me realize how often a number can be technically correct and still make you believe something false. Written in 1954, it reads like a guide to surviving today’s news, ads, polls, and viral charts. My biggest lessons: • An “average” means nothing until you ask which average. • A survey is only as honest as the people it sampled. • A graph can create drama simply by cutting off its baseline. • Correlation can look convincing without proving causation. • Percentages are useless when the original number is hidden. Huff writes: “The secret language of statistics… is employed to sensationalize, inflate, confuse, and oversimplify.” Life-changing. It taught me not to fear numbers, but to question the person presenting them. Now whenever I see a shocking statistic, I ask: Compared with what?
