the WIRED article about the (alleged) sex robot actually seems totally fine if you read it. but there’s a deeper point to make here. im not saying WIRED actually is this, but it feels obvious that the most interesting form of writing a media outlet could aspire to these days is having an inside baseball view of technological development, while also retaining a deep distaste for it. you think this too, even if you don’t realize it yet. aren’t you tired of the fawning? aren’t you exhausted of the salivating? if you answered no, and you shouldn’t be either, because the triumphant deserves endless, heaping praise, you should consider that im not making a statement on who deserves what, but rather that the optimal amount of knife fighting done in good writing is a lot higher than you may believe. the best media is filled with hate. some of it is simmering under the surface, like most ‘new media’, and some of it is shoved into the words, which is how WIRED likes to do it. boring! but it works. look at all the people clicking on it, quoting it, thinking that this is it for journalists, that this is the end for them and their pathetic career. it really is fun for everyone involved: WIRED gets a stab in, the tech people get a stab in, and they both leave covered in blood and big dumb grins and excited to tell their friends about what went down
