China’s Supreme People’s Court has recently issued a document that, for the first time, explicitly incorporates “sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression” into the scope of legal protection against discrimination.
“Courts shall provide equal protection of the lawful rights and interests of sexual minorities, including prohibiting the insult and defamation of others on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression; prohibiting discrimination in employment on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression; and protecting students of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.”
