AT&T, T-MOBILE AND VERIZON PLAN JOINT VENTURE TO TARGET DEAD ZONES
The three largest U.S. wireless carriers signed an agreement in principle to form a joint venture focused on coverage gaps.
The plan is to pool limited ground-based spectrum resources and support satellite-based direct-to-device services.
Target areas include rural roads, national parks, boats, emergency zones and other places where traditional cell towers do not reach.
The JV would also work on a unified technical standard for carriers and satellite network operators.
Existing carrier-satellite agreements would remain in place.
The deal is still not final and remains subject to definitive agreements and closing conditions.
