A massive plume of ash rose above Mayon Volcano in the Philippines on Friday as an eruption prompted authorities to raise the volcanic alert level and order evacuations.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert status to Level 3 on a five-level scale, warning of increased volcanic activity and the potential for more dangerous eruptions.
Residents within the volcano's 3.7-mile Permanent Danger Zone were urged to evacuate immediately due to the threat of lava flows and fast-moving currents of hot gas, ash and volcanic debris.
