Rick Rescorla saved nearly 3000 lives on 9/11/2001.
The Vietnam veteran was working as VP of security for Morgan Stanley in the South Tower.
Following the attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, Rescorla became convinced that the terrorists would return and created a disaster contingency plan for the company.
On the day of the attack, Rescorla sprang into action with his plan, grabbed his bullhorn, ignored the Port Authority order to stay put, and began evacuating employees.
Evacuees say Rescorla sang "God Bless America" over his bullhorn to help calm them down as they evacuated.
In his final call to his wife, Rescorla told her: "Stop crying. I have to get these people out safely. If something should happen to me, I want you to know I’ve never been happier. You made my life."
Rescorla was last seen climbing the stairs to make sure all the employees had been evacuated.
He died on that tragic day, but 2700 lives were saved because of him.
