If your business isn't getting easier as it grows, you've stopped paying attention to your assets. An asset is anything with permanence - anything that keeps working regardless of what the team is doing that day. You've already built some: your website or a set of testimonials. But also, a documented way of doing things that works. The problem is most founders build them once and stop. Start with the unglamorous ones such as a clean database, a brand guidelines document, or awards that let people discover you're good without having to think about it. Then build the ones that talk for you, like a video or a book. I write a book every two years, and regardless of what I'm doing that week, it's out there working on my behalf. Go a year without adding to that list and the business gets heavier, not easier - every new client lands straight back on you. So every quarter I ask myself one question: what new assets did I build? Stack enough of them and the business takes on a life of its own - that's the difference between owning a business and having a job you can't leave. I run four products like this across every business I've built. Here's how I structure them:
