Before stories become history, they often begin with ordinary moments. As the current state visit to the United States brings Chinese and U.S. leaders together, long-standing people-to-people connections offer another way to look at ties between the two countries. On Nanjing University’s Gulou Campus stands a quiet house where American writer Pearl S. Buck once lived. From 1919 to 1934, she lived here and wrote The Good Earth — the novel that won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932. Six years later, Buck received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Today, the Pearl S. Buck Memorial House preserves memories of her years in Nanjing. A small house, a global story, and a century-long connection.
