Mark Ruffalo earned roughly $50 million playing a green rage monster for Disney, and he spends his downtime demanding the state confiscate your savings. You have watched him do it. In 2019 he tweeted that capitalism is "failing us" and called for an "economic revolution." This from a man whose entire fortune exists because millions of people voluntarily bought movie tickets. The cuckoldry, in the precise economic sense: he sold his labor on one of the freest markets on earth, Hollywood, at prices no bureaucrat set, then begged the apparatus of coercion to punish everyone else who tries the same. Take his fracking crusade. Ruffalo campaigned for years against natural gas extraction in New York, and Andrew Cuomo banned it in 2014. Result: upstate landowners lost billions in forgone royalties, and New Yorkers now import gas from Pennsylvania, where the drilling happens anyway. Ruffalo kept the view from his Sullivan County property pristine. You paid for it. Mises named this type in The Anti-Capitalistic Mentality back in 1956: the resentful intellectual who mistakes his personal guilt for a social theory. Ruffalo feels bad about his mansion, so you must surrender your paycheck. He endorsed Bernie Sanders in 2016 and again in 2020, backing wealth taxes that would gut a family machine shop in Ohio while barely grazing Hollywood royalty streams structured by tax attorneys. Call it hypocrisy and you undersell it. Advocacy costs him nothing and buys enormous status among the people who make casting decisions. He spends your economic freedom to purchase his own absolution. We have a term for that kind of arrangement: seigniorage of the soul. He prints virtue, and you eat the devaluation.
