NewLimit CEO @jacobkimmel predicts AI will bring drug discovery back to the phenotypic paradigm that dominated from the 1930s to 1970s: "A lot of the medicines that first came about in the 1930s through the 1970s, we actually didn't know the mechanism for. They were discovered empirically, meaning someone created a molecule, they put it in an animal, and they asked what happened." "This is how Paul Janssen, I believe he probably holds the record for inventing the most drugs ever in history. He would synthesize new compounds, put them in a series of rats, and ask what they might be feeling as a result of that drug." "What AI will bring us back to is more of that phenotypic paradigm where we can come up with compositions that have the effects we want, and maybe we don't understand them on day one. We can't explain it or draw out a diagram on a whiteboard of exactly what's happening." "But if it's effective and it's safe, that's all that's necessary for a medicine. It doesn't matter if we have a nice succinct story to tell about it." @newlimit
