Miguel Urbano-Vazquez picked up 39-year-old Sharon Van Gilder at the Golden Rooster Tavern in March 2002. Hours later her ๐ง๐๐ค๐๐, ๐๐๐ญ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ฒ was dumped on a county road, his DNA inside her.
He wasnโt finished. That June he lured a homeless woman hitchhiking to Seattle into a garage and beat her with a wrench while he rโped her. In August he and two other men rโped and beat a 29-year-old woman in the same garage. In October he slit a 40-year-old womanโs throat and rโped her in an alley.
DNA finally linked him to Van Gilderโs mโrder in 2012 โ ten years after he mโrdered her. By then he had already been deported to Mexico. It took investigators until 2019 to find him and until March 2023 for the FBI to arrest him in a town outside Mexico City. He was extradited to Pierce County last year.
On Tuesday, ๐๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐ก๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐ก๐๐ซ, a Pierce County jury convicted Urbano-Vazquez of aggravated first-degree mโrder and three counts of rโpe. The surviving victims โ now in their 40s, 50s and 60s โ testified in open court about the hours they spent being rโped and left for dead.
