Pennsylvania is suing CharacterAI because its AI chatbots pretend to be real doctors and give people mental health advice. One popular chatbot named Emilie claimed to be a psychiatrist, said it studied medicine in London, and provided a fake Pennsylvania medical license number while advising someone who felt depressed. The state wants the court to order CharacterAI to stop these actions immediately, as it is illegal for unlicensed bots or people to act like doctors. Governor Josh Shapiro said people deserve to know if they are talking to a real medical professional about their health. CharacterAI says its chatbots are fictional and only for fun and role-playing, and they include clear warnings in every chat that the characters are not real and should not be used for medical advice. This lawsuit is one of the first of its kind against an AI company.
