California lawmakers have unanimously passed an exemption for Linux open-source software from the upcoming age-verification law. If Governor Newsom signs it, Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and Arch won’t have to add age-verification systems. Software released under GPL, MIT, BSD and Apache licenses would be exempt. Windows, macOS, iOS and Android would still be covered by the law, set to take effect in 2027.
