Gen Urobuchi’s first ending for Walpurgisnacht Rising got reworked before it hit theaters.
Urobuchi, the main writer on Puella Magi Madoka Magica, told Kyodo News that director Akiyuki Shinbo wanted to “change the ending after all.” The team went back to his draft, with tweaks.
The story stays the same up to the midway point. What changed, he said, was the presentation, reworked so it “offers a sense of salvation.”
His usual habit is writing characters out of the story. This time, he said, there were no gasp moments. He called that a good decision, and said the film became a lighter watch.
So the ending he wrote stayed. What changed is how hard it lands.
