Russia's sanctions problem just walked into China's biggest shipyard looking for a fix.
Nikolai Patrushev, a top Putin aide now chairing Russia's Maritime Board, spent his first trip in that role touring Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, one of China's largest yards, which builds everything from oil tankers to China's first domestic cruise liner.
Here's what Russia actually needs. Western sanctions have left its shipbuilding industry starved of components, slower, and more expensive to run. China dominates global shipbuilding, over half the world's completions, new orders, and total orderbook last year alone.
What Patrushev pitched: Chinese shipbuilders acting as technology partners and equipment suppliers for Russian shipyards, joint construction of ice-class vessels for Arctic and Northern Sea Route shipping, and exchanges between Chinese and Russian ship designers. He also visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University to discuss training Russian engineering students there, and scouted a potential new container shipping line between a major Chinese port and Russian ports.
