For 20 years, quantum computing researchers have been fighting a bottleneck invisible to most, one that could eat up to 95% of a quantum computer's capacity. Google just demonstrated a practical fix. Title: Bringing the magic: Google breaks open a bottleneck in quantum computing URL: 🧩 The problem Universal quantum computation and error correction require "magic states," and producing high-fidelity ones is so costly that up to 95% of a quantum computer's capacity could be consumed just generating them, and they can't be reused once consumed. 💡 The approach "Magic state cultivation" injects imperfect quantum states into a small chip region, then uses coordinated measurements to detect and discard flawed attempts, growing exceptionally pure states. Getting there took some real detective work: the team traced anomalous data to electrical drift and temperature fluctuations, then fixed it with tighter environmental controls and a novel self-measuring benchmark that uses cultivation itself as the measurement tool. 🔧 Technical highlights The team also demonstrated "code switching," successfully grafting states from distance-3 color codes to distance-5 surface codes, two different error-correction schemes, showing compatibility with existing quantum architectures. 📊 Results On Google's Willow processor, cultivated states showed a 40-fold error reduction over uncultivated ones, hitting a record T-state logical fidelity of 99.99%. The work is published in Science. #QuantumComputing# #GoogleQuantumAI#
