Quick story time. It took me FOREVER to get my first job in crypto. It was 2023 and I already had 8+ years experience in mainstream marketing including working as a copywriter for a business that spent $10M on Facebook ads per year. And yet - I was no one in crypto. And blockchain seemed very technical and confusing. But I liked the culture. And I loved that the people working in crypto seemed to be: A) genius but socially awkward B) ADHD/ autistic spectrum C) doing their own thing away from the system So I was super determined to get involved. I even remember applying for unpaid internships even though I was insanely overqualified. (Funny that 2 years later, I’d be sitting at an invite-only dinner in Cannes across from the person that rejected me for an unpaid internship and they’d be asking me for media tips lol) Anyway. I wanted a job, fast. And I knew that learning about coding from zero and becoming a dev would take ages. Instead, I decided to do 2 things I had control over: 1) lead with the skills I had that crypto-native people didn’t seem to have 2) become as visible as possible by joining discords, communities, and posting here And damn it, it worked. I joined the @shefiorg course around September 2023. I posted about the things I was learning to 0 followers, then 10 followers, then 100 followers… Then, I started going to small Ethereum events around Europe. I paid for travel and hotels out of my own pocket with the money I was making from my coaching business on instagram. Then, in July 2024, I applied for a job and FINALLY got a response. That came after sending idk how many hundreds of applications. I saw the job on the @BoysClubWorld discord. My instinct was correct - this job required PR, media, and writing skills. I had all of that. And by July, I had a decent knowledge of the crypto space (mostly the culture but some tech, too). I got the job. It was my first real crypto job with a good paycheck. 10 months later, I got an offer from Cointelegraph. I started producing media content on @gazza_jenks’s team. That’s when the cool experiences started coming - free tickets to the F1, super yachts, a reception at Napoleon’s townhouse in Paris, etc. Ultimately, I got my job at WalletConnect where in the last nearly 2 years I’ve gotten a lot more technical. Another funny thing happened during this whole time - Crypto and mainstream tech started intertwining. If you’re a mainstream marketer pivoting to crypto now, you’d be in a lot more demand than I was in 2023 because now everyone wants to get out of the crypto bubble and reach more people. Anyway, sharing this because I saw someone post about internship roles. If I had a chance to travel back to 2023, I would do it all again. I love working in crypto.
