The Trans-Siberian Railway spans 9,289 km from Moscow to Vladivostok -- the longest uninterrupted railway line in the world -- and was built almost entirely by hand between 1891 and 1916, crossing 16 major rivers and eight time zones.
At its peak, 89,000 workers were employed simultaneously; an estimated 1,500 died during construction.
