The first surviving photograph, taken by Nicephore Niepce around 1826, required an approximately 8-hour exposure in full daylight.
Within 60 years, photographic technology had improved so dramatically that cameras could freeze motion at 1/1000th of a second -- a 30-million-fold improvement in sensitivity achieved through chemistry, not optics.
