The Large Hadron Collider at CERN is a 27-kilometre ring buried up to 175 metres underground beneath the French-Swiss border.
Operating conditions:
- Temperature: 1.9 Kelvin (-271 degrees C), colder than outer space
- Magnetic field: 8.3 Tesla, 100,000 times Earth's magnetic field
- Proton speed: 99.9999991% of the speed of light
- Collision energy: up to 13.6 TeV
The protons that collide inside it travel the full 27 km circuit approximately 11,000 times per second.
The LHC is the largest, coldest, and most precisely engineered machine ever built.
It was constructed to ask questions about the first billionths of a second after the Big Bang.
