In the mid-1980s, my then-16-year-old mother was working as a hostess at the Inn of the Seventh Ray in Topanga Canyon. Throughout my life, she has recounted Dolly Parton’s many joyful visits to the restaurant, which she often heard before she saw, as Dolly would start singing my mom’s name from across the parking lot as she approached the building. She knew everyone’s names. Rest in peace to someone who was, by all accounts, hospitality personified.
