At Bernstein's 23rd SDC in London
$ARM could sell more CPUs today if TSMC could manufacture more wafers for them.
Why Intel Foundry Was Dismissed?
Management's concern appears to be less about technology specs and more about execution risk.
Building an advanced semiconductor product requires far more foundry support than licensing IP
Intel Foundry was viewed as lacking the level of customer support and advanced-node manufacturing experience required for a first-generation CPU program.
The argument is:
Apple
Can work with almost anybody because Apple already has:
World-class silicon teams
Manufacturing expertise
Decades of experience
ARM
Is launching its first internally developed CPU.
Therefore it needs a foundry partner that:
Has mature workflows
Has proven support teams
Has extensive advanced-node experience
Management reportedly believes Intel Foundry doesn't yet offer the same level of ecosystem support as TSMC.
