This is my favorite story that perfectly describes why you can't build things by compromising.
UTC is UTC because the English wanted CUT (coordinated universal time) and the French wanted TUC (temps universel coordonné.)
So they compromised on UTC, which makes no sense in either English or French. This describes the state of the world perfectly I think.
