Silicon Valley is building “Super Saiyans.”
In the past, the main focus of Silicon Valley startups in reproductive genetics was to use genetic screening in IVF to reduce the risk of inherited diseases. But the technology is now moving beyond disease prevention toward selecting embryos for potentially more desirable traits—such as height, cognitive ability, longevity, and even eye or hair color. The cost can reach around $50,000.
Companies such as Nucleus, Orchid, and Herasight have begun offering polygenic embryo screening services. The market is still very small: in 2024, only about 100,000 babies in the U.S. were born through IVF, accounting for roughly 2.8% of total births.
But if costs continue to fall, this market could scale rapidly.
