the new MyKad is a lesson in API design, taught at national scale.
what happened: the redesign moved the photo to the left and the chip to the back. every eKYC system in the country was trained on the old layout. result:
@mydigital_ID,
@MyTouchnGo eWallet,
@gxbankmy, AEON Bank and
@rytbankmy all reject the new card (per SoyaCincau).
in software terms: the interface changed, nobody versioned it, and every client broke on day one.
how others handle ID transitions:
1 | Singapore and the EU reportedly hand banks and telcos specs and sample cards months before citizens hold the new one, so the scanners update first
2 | Estonia solved it at the root: digital identity lives in cryptographic keys (Smart-ID), not on the plastic. redesign the card all you want, nothing breaks
practical bits if you're affected:
• your current MyKad stays fully valid (BUDI95 included). no rush to swap
• MyDigital ID says online registration for the new card arrives Oct 1
• until then: ~700 physical kiosks, or pre-register at the JPN counter when you collect
credit where it’s due: malaysia never shies away from pushing tech forward early (we were 1st with biometric passports back in ’98). the 53 new security features & biometric QR are legit upgrades. just need the integration docs shipped before the hardware next time!
First-time users of the redesigned MyKad are currently unable to complete MyDigital ID’s online registration, as the system has yet to recognise the new card.
The card has also been rejected by Touch ‘n Go eWallet, Ryt Bank, AEON Bank and GXBank, highlighting wider compatibility issues, SoyaCincau reports.
