On May 15, 1974, Japan's first 7-Eleven store opened in Toyosu, Tokyo. The first item sold at this landmark store was a pair of sunglasses. At the time, they were reportedly a best-selling item at 7-Eleven stores in the United States as well. Since then, the chain has introduced a variety of original Japanese products such as onigiri and oden, developing the American-born convenience store culture into a uniquely Japanese experience.
