Time to pay tribute to a hero you may have never heard of. An American warrior refused to quit after an IED nearly burned him alive in Afghanistan. In December 2005, U.S. Air Force Tactical Air Control Party specialist Israel Del Toro was riding in a Humvee when it struck a roadside bomb in the mountains of Afghanistan. Engulfed in flames, he threw himself into a creek and kept relaying airstrike coordinates for his unit before collapsing. He suffered burns over 80 percent of his body, lost fingers, and spent three months in a coma. Doctors gave him a 15 percent chance of survival and believed he would never walk or breathe without a respirator. Del Toro refused to accept that fate. He endured more than 100 surgeries and years of brutal rehabilitation. In 2010 he made history by becoming the first fully combat-disabled airman to re-enlist in the Air Force. He went on to mentor new tactical airmen, win a gold medal at the Invictus Games, complete his 131st parachute jump, and receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service. He retired in 2019 after 22 years, strictly on his own terms. Israel Del Toro’s story is a reminder of the unmatched resilience of the American warfighter. Bob passed away this morning at the age of 104, leaving behind a legacy of courage, service, and an unwavering commitment to keeping history alive.🕊️ Born on October 1, 1921, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Bob grew up near the old Aiea railroad station in Navy housing overlooking the waters where history would soon unfold. A graduate of Roosevelt High School’s Class of 1940, he began building a life on Oʻahu, never knowing that one morning would forever change the course of his life,and the world. In the early hours of December 7, 1941, after returning home from an evening with friends, Bob was awakened by the thunder of explosions over Ford Island. “I was awakened by the explosions over on Ford Island, because that was the main attack,” he later recalled. “Our house was a mile, slightly more, from Ford Island. I was looking right at the Arizona when it blew up.” From his home, young Bob witnessed the horror of the attack, flames rising into the sky, smoke covering Pearl Harbor, the USS Oklahoma slowly rolling over, and the USS Arizona glowing bright red before a massive explosion consumed the battleship. It was a moment of unimaginable devastation, but also a moment that revealed the courage and compassion of ordinary people called to extraordinary action. After helping his grandfather reach safety in Halawa, Bob returned home, took up his .22 caliber rifle, and fired at the attacking aircraft. He and his mother then rushed to help wounded sailors who had escaped into the burning waters of the harbor, washing oil from their bodies at the Aiea Boat Landing and helping them return to their ships. “I can’t remember that anyone was frightened,” Bob once said. “They were very angry. As soon as they were washed off, they jumped on the boats and went back to their ships.” After the war, Bob built a life filled with love, family, and service. He married his wife, Jean, and in 1955 began a 30-year career with Pan American World Airways. Together, they raised two daughters and a son, creating a family legacy rooted in strength, kindness, and dedication. Today, we remember not only the young man who witnessed history, but the remarkable man who spent his life preserving it. Rest peacefully, Uncle Bob. By inventing junk bonds, he revolutionized capitalism, putting inefficiency and corporate complacency in the crosshairs. Armed with only a "highly confident" letter, anyone could be a hunter and anyone could be prey. Milken's innovation meant that new ideas flourished, and CEOs were forced to adopt an "evolve or die" mentality. There are now millions of people have jobs because of Michael Milken. America itself is more competitive globally because of him. And after he got out of jail, he revolutionized how we approach philanthropy and cancer research. And despite his pardon, he still has a lifetime ban from the SEC (since 1990) for the securities industry. Travesty.
