Bobby has three best friends. He has had the same three since first grade, in a small town in West Texas. That was 1964. Every October since 1976, the four of them have spent the same weekend at the same fishing cabin on the same lake. There are rules. No wives. No phones. (Added in 2009.) Whoever catches the most does not clean the fish. And on the cabin wall, in pencil, from a card game in 1987: "BOBBY OWES CAL $3.75." Nobody has ever let him pay it. Cal says if Bobby pays it, it's over. In 1990, Bobby married my wife's cousin, Keiko, and moved to Tokyo. He still flew home every October. Thirty-six years. He never missed one. This February, Bobby had a stroke. His right side went weak. His words got stuck. The doctors said no flying this year. It was going to be the first October in fifty years without all four of them. At the end of September, Keiko's doorbell rang. Cal, Junior, and Dewayne were standing in the hallway of a Tokyo apartment building. They had a cooler. Three folding chairs. Fishing rods. And a board. They had unscrewed the piece of the cabin wall with the IOU on it and carried it across the Pacific Ocean. "Well," Cal said. "You couldn't come to the lake." Keiko's apartment has a balcony the size of a pickup bed. It faces a river. They set up the chairs facing the river and declared it the lake. Junior filled a bucket with water and cast into it for three hours. He said it was the best day he'd ever had on that lake. Bobby couldn't really talk yet. So they told his stories for him. They had heard every one of them for fifty years. And they told them wrong. On purpose. "And then Bobby caught a catfish this big—" Bobby slapped the table with his good hand and made a noise like an angry tractor. "Oh, my mistake. This big." Louder tractor. They did this for four days. Bobby fought them on every single detail. With one hand and every sound he had. The week after they left, his speech therapist asked Keiko what on earth had happened. She had never seen progress like it. On the last night, Keiko woke up at 2 a.m. and heard a voice on the balcony. Cal was sitting next to Bobby in the dark, holding his hand. "You don't get to quit on us," he said. "You hear me? We've got a cabin to get back to." The next evening, the four of them played cards one last time. Bobby won a hand. Cal looked at the pot. "Well," he said. "That's $3.75. Guess you're even." The room went quiet. Bobby looked at the board leaning against the wall. Then at Cal. And for the first time since February, he said a whole sentence. "Not... paying... you." Junior laughed so hard he fell out of his folding chair. Dewayne cried into the cooler. Cal just sat there nodding with his whole face wet. In Japanese, we have a word for friendships like this. Kusare-en. A bond so old it has gone rotten, and still refuses to break. It is the highest compliment I know. Bobby walks with a cane now. He says next October, he's flying home. The board is hanging in Keiko's hallway until then. Bobby still owes Cal $3.75. Some debts you keep on purpose.
