AMRO recently conducted two workshops in Lao PDR and Brunei Darussalam to deepen official’s understanding of the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralisation (CMIM) —the region’s financial safety net—and strengthen its operational readiness. President Xi Jinping met with Crown Prince of Brunei Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, who is on an official visit to China. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of China-Brunei diplomatic ties. In a changing and turbulent world, the two sides should stay committed to the vision of a China-Brunei community with a shared future, strengthen strategic communication and deepen practical cooperation to provide more certainty and positive energy for peace and stability in the region.

As close neighbors across the sea, China and Brunei have long been connected by the ancient Maritime Silk Road, which brought the two peoples together through trade, culture, and friendship. This year marks 35 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Ang Kai Lip, a participant in the 12th Peking University Oriental Scholarship Program on Governance, shares how his journey to China became a story of reconnecting with heritage and building mutual understanding.
