🚨NEW: Reform UK have pledged to scrap GDPR and replace it with data protections based on New Zealand’s model
It comes after economists reported GDPR cut investment in tech firms by 25% compared to American competitors
Imagine if @EU_Commission decides to fine Samsung using GDPR for the constant recording of audio with data sent to them and 400 partners.
A fine of 4% of worldwide revenues and we are ready to invest in the largest AI cluster of the world. 😂
The EU Council, the body representing EU member state governments has approved a position that would let companies train AI on Europeans’ personal data without consent.
It would make AI training a recognised “legitimate interest” under GDPR one of the legal bases companies can use to process personal data without asking for permission under the current framework, AI training on personal data generally requires consent or a clear, specific legal basis this proposal shifts that.
what “legitimate interest” means in practice: the company decides that its interest in using your data outweighs your interest in not having it used.
The draft also proposes letting companies keep sensitive personal data that ends up in training sets “accidentally” if removing it would require “disproportionate effort.” with safeguards, but still.
Who benefits: companies that already hold large amounts of European personal data which are mostly American and Chinese AI firms.
Max Schrems’s framing: “digital expropriation.” Europeans’ data being taken and handed to companies without the people it belongs to having a say.
where it stands: the EU Council approved their position. the European Parliament must still agree. this is not law yet but the Council’s backing is a significant step.
You've told ChatGPT things you'd never tell Google.
By default, your chats are going straight to 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 the next model.
Do these 13 steps to erase your data from OpenAI's servers:
Under GDPR, they're 𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 required to delete it when you ask.
Step 1. Delete the individual chats (i know it's quite obvious and time-consuming)
Click the 3 dots on the left sidebar of any chat & 'Delete.' The chat will be permanently deleted from the OpenAI system within 30 days.
Step 2. Delete the chat links you shared with someone.
Go to ChatGPT settings > click on 'Data Controls'
Delete all the listed shared chats.
Deleting them does not delete your own chats.
Step 4. Copy the 3 prompts from here:
It shows what ChatGPT keeps on you, then it will walk you through every settings and finally write a deletion request
Step 5. Turn off Data Training
Go to ChatGPT account Settings → Data controls.
Turn off "Improve the model for everyone" toggle.
It uses your chats to train the model by default.
Step 6. Turn off Memory
Go to ChatGPT account Settings → Personalisation.
Manage your ChatGPT memory in this tab.
Memory is used for training unless the toggle is off.
Step 7. Turn off Codex memory
If you use Codex, turn off its separate training switch in Codex Settings. The main ChatGPT toggle doesn’t cover it.
Step 8. Use Temporary chats
The number 1 rule, use temporary chats (upper right corner) for anything personal. It will still keep the data for 30 days for safety but is never used for training.
Step 9. Clean up Storage
Go to ChatGPT account Settings → Storage.
Clean up old chats → Review.
To copy the prompts (run them in order, same chat), go to
----
Go through all the settings in ChatGPT right away.
