An ice-rock avalanche originating from a glacier on the south slope of Mount Langtang Lirung in Nepal fractured at an altitude of about 5,200 meters has been identified as the cause of a devastating mudslide that struck Gyirong Port in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region on Aug. 26, local authorities said Sunday. The avalanche plunged rapidly to an altitude of around 4,000 meters, scouring the mountainside and developing into a massive debris flow, which surged about 22 kilometers before reaching Gyirong Port at an altitude of around 1,800 meters. The disaster flattened an area of about 0.7 square kilometers, destroying 27 buildings and related facilities in the area. The findings were made by a cryosphere emergency disaster response team from the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, based on the analysis of remote-sensing monitoring data and field-transmitted data, as well as on-site surveys and investigations.

Some more thoughts re Navier-Stokes by OpenAI - Not entirely unexpected as this was supposed to be the Millennium Prize problem the most susceptible to finding a counterexample with known methods, but still, unexpectedly early. I would bet on 2027 for a problem of this calibre to be solved. - I'm still pretty much shocked by it. Being a mathematician myself, Millennium Prize problems were always a pinnacle. There are of course more encompassing conjectures (Langlands programme), but these are the single most known problems out there. - Funnily, I'm not sure it's AGI. Or we already had AGI with GPT-5.5 and Fable, because this is more of the same. 10,000 agents, 130b tokens, scaling test-time compute is the way to go, but isn't really novel nor very AGI-like. - There's a very real cost to this result in millions of dollars of human time-compute. There are not many businesses that could throw compute at single problems: building rockets or drug research or hedge funds perhaps. - I'm still pretty conflicted about this collective of narrow super-intelligences aka modern LLMs with harnesses. Are there diminishing returns past certain intelligence point? Is it all about the problem choice now to maximize your ROI? There's a reason we see less economic impact of AI than expected from this level of math breakthroughs. Generalization still seems to be the main missing skill that's hard to RL.

Hebei Xianghe Villagers Protest Authorities' Construction of Razor-Wire Barrier Wall; Entering Beijing Now Harder Than Leaving the Country (July 20, 2026) On July 20, in Baoshang Village, Anping Town, Xianghe County, Langfang, Hebei Province, authorities replaced what had been temporary barrier panels with a permanent wall topped with razor wire, intending to permanently separate the village from the neighboring Xiaotun Village in Huoxian Town, Tongzhou District, Beijing. The move sparked discontent among villagers, who gathered at the road junction to protest. In recent times, many stretches of the barrier fencing along the Hebei-Beijing border have likewise been replaced with razor-wire walls, to the point that residents living along the Hebei-Beijing boundary now find it harder to enter Beijing than some border villagers find it to leave the country.
