MiCA Could Bring DeFi Lending Vaults Under EU Rules MiCA may soon face new rules for DeFi lending and borrowing in Europe. Earlier on May, 20, the European Commission asked stakeholders for views on areas outside the original MiCA framework. Lending vaults are a major concern because they can move billions into onchain credit markets. Their legal status remains unclear because EU law does not define a specific vault category. MiCA Rules Hit Bitpanda With Austria’s First Published Penalty Austria’s financial regulator has fined Bitpanda €70,000 for violating MiCA requirements. The FMA said Bitpanda failed to submit a crypto asset white paper on time. The company also published marketing material before submitting the required document. Another advertisement lacked mandatory disclosures and required contact information. The penalty was issued under an expedited procedure and is now final.

MiCA Triggers Massive Crypto Industry Shakeup Across Europe Only about one in five pre MiCA crypto firms received authorization, according to TRM Labs. The report counted 281 authorized firms out of 1,343 organizations that applied. Poland saw no authorizations among more than 1,800 previously registered crypto organizations. Lithuania authorized only eight firms from a pool exceeding 400. Germany, France and the Netherlands retained a much larger share of licensed providers. The remaining unauthorized firms also showed higher exposure to illicit and sanctioned activity. TRM Labs said MiCA has concentrated Europe’s crypto market among more regulated providers.

MiCA Licensing Chaos Attracts Crypto Scammers Across Europe Fraudsters are impersonating both crypto companies and their regulators as customers scramble to find licensed providers under the EU's new MiCA regime. French watchdog AMF says the transition period has become a prime opportunity for scammers. Per reports. fraudsters use fake regulator identities and forged documents. Customers of unlicensed exchanges face higher phishing risks. Authorities warn investors not to rush asset transfers. Data provider VASPnet estimates more than 1,700 unlicensed crypto companies must cease EU operations after missing the MiCA licensing deadline. Only 323 firms have secured approval so far, according to ESMA's updated list. Source: Financial Times

MiCA’s reserve rules seem backwards. They can force @Tether a roughly $185B, fully reserved stablecoin issuer to place collateral in largely uninsured deposits at European banks, replacing highly liquid reserve assets with bank counterparty risk. Large banks typically hold only around 10–30% of deposits in cash or readily mobilizable liquidity on any given day. Lloyds, for example, held £57B in cash and central-bank balances against £496.5B of customer deposits at year-end 2025, about 11.5%. And outside Europe’s top 20 banks, deposit bases fall below €500B very quickly, meaning substantially less absolute liquidity.
