China spends roughly the same on domestic policing and “stability maintenance” as it does on national defence. On our “Drum Tower” podcast, we ask if that price tag is too high. Listen now

⚡️ Poland sets a condition for Ukraine: the Bandera issue must be resolved before EU membership Polish Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said that Warsaw alone will decide whether to support Ukraine's accession to the European Union, stressing that no one has the right to dictate how Poland should vote. Asked whether Ukraine could join the EU while Stepan Bandera remains one of the central figures of its national pantheon, the minister replied that Kyiv must meet all EU accession requirements, including those related to historical memory. According to Kosiniak-Kamysz, a candidate country cannot build its policy of remembrance around figures and events that cause pain and provoke objections from its EU partners. He also accused the Ukrainian authorities of using the historical dispute with Poland for domestic political purposes.

A few personal perspectives on 🇪🇪 foreign and security policy. I have devoted my entire adult life to protecting and advancing Estonia as a diplomat and civil servant. I have had the honour of working alongside dedicated people and leading teams with whom we have shaped Estonia’s foreign and defence policy and implemented many of the decisions that have brought us to where we are today. Developing and implementing a comprehensive approach to national defence, bringing Allied military forces to Estonia, strengthening NATO’s collective defence and standing up to Russian aggression – these have been the right choices. They have made Estonia stronger. I have done my work with complete dedication and passion, and I am proud of what we have achieved together. Today, however, I have come to believe that protecting Estonia and moving our country forward requires more than I can accomplish as a civil servant. Estonia needs greater ambition. Not a change of course. Not turning the ship around or running it aground. Quite the opposite. To stay the course of freedom we have chosen, both Estonia and Europe must act with greater confidence and determination. We must ensure that aggression fails. And we must shape the peace that follows so that it safeguards our freedom as well. This is where political leadership at the level of the European Council becomes decisive. For this is where the decisions that matter most for Europe’s future are now made. Not necessarily, or even primarily, around formal negotiating tables. But they are made at the level of leaders. In shaping Europe’s future, Estonia must not simply drift along with the current, let alone become an obstacle or a disruptive force. Quite the opposite. Estonia must lead. We must be a country whose voice carries weight, whose views are heard and whose initiatives inspire others to follow. Keeping Estonia at the heart of Europe, and ensuring that Europe itself endures, is our responsibility. And it is also the most important guarantee of 🇪🇪 freedom.

Italy and Greece today signed in Rome the Implementing Arrangement concerning the transfer, through Fincantieri, of two FREMM frigates, Carlo Bergamini and Virginio Fasan, currently in service with the Italian Navy fleet, to the Hellenic Navy. The agreement was signed between the General Directorate of Defence Investments and Armaments (GDDIA) of the Ministry of National Defence and its Italian counterpart, the Italian General Directorate for Armaments, in the presence of Italian Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto, Greek Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias, and the Chiefs of the respective Navies, Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto and Admiral Dimitrios-Eleftherios Kataras. Representing Fincantieri were our CEO Pierroberto Folgiero, and Eugenio Santagata, our General Manager of the Naval Vessels Division. The Implementing Arrangement follows the Memorandum of Cooperation and the Declaration of Intent signed in September 2025 and further strengthens relations between Italy and Greece. We will play a leading role both in the transfer process and in providing support throughout the entire lifecycle of the two vessels, while also contributing to the strengthening of industrial cooperation with Greece. Designed and built by us for the Italian Navy, the two frigates represent one of the most advanced expressions of the Group’s technological and industrial capabilities, combining innovation, operational support, and long-term international cooperation, while also demonstrating the value of the FREMM platform in terms of adaptability, flexibility, and continuity of naval operations. @ItalianNavy @MinisteroDifesa @GuidoCrosetto @NikosDendias

When duty calls, even on leave, a hero answers. 🔥 A People's Armed Police officer was enjoying his day off when he suddenly spotted a fire with four children trapped inside. Without a second thought, he climbed up to the window and pulled every single child to safety. Salute to this real-life hero! 🇨🇳❤️ Source: NationalDefenseEducationChannel/ Douyin

An Indian Startup Wants to Build a Defence Dome Across Our Skies! In 2019, Kiran Raju Penumacha watched a drone attack on Saudi Arabia's Aramco oil facilities expose a frightening weakness in modern defence. Drones costing a fraction of traditional military equipment had helped disrupt one of the world's largest oil producers. For Kiran, who had spent years researching autonomous systems, the attack raised an uncomfortable question: Could India's critical infrastructure withstand something similar? His concerns deepened as drones began appearing along the Punjab border, carrying weapons and narcotics. Then, in 2021, drones struck the Jammu Air Force Station. The threat was getting closer to home. Kiran had studied at Carnegie Mellon University and spent years working on autonomous technologies. Drawing on that experience, he began building Indrajaal, a Hyderabad-based startup with an ambitious vision: an intelligent defence network capable of protecting entire regions. Its proposed coverage? Up to 4,000 square kilometres. At the centre sits SkyOS, an AI platform connecting radars, cameras and radio-frequency sensors to detect and assess suspicious drones. Depending on the threat, the system can deploy electronic jamming, interfere with navigation, attempt cyber takeover of compatible drones or activate physical interceptors. During Operation Sindoor in May 2025, Indrajaal reported deploying its technology at a strategic naval installation in western India. The company's ambitions have since translated into substantial government orders. In August 2026, Indrajaal and Sigma Advanced Systems announced approximately ₹155 crore in orders for Ranger, their mobile counter-drone vehicle, including ₹145 crore for border security and ₹10 crore for urban policing. Ranger can patrol while monitoring the skies, an important capability when hostile drones can cross borders at unpredictable locations. For India, with its extensive borders, coastlines, refineries and military installations, affordable counter-drone protection is becoming increasingly important. Kiran's journey began with a vulnerability exposed thousands of kilometres away. Today, his company is developing technology intended to prevent similar attacks on Indian soil. And that leaves us with a difficult question. As AI takes on greater responsibility for national defence, how much decision-making authority should we give to these machines?
