NieR creator Yoko Taro says he would like to retire from making video games, but fear of dementia keeps him working.
The director of NieR: Automata and Drakengard recently admitted he feels he has already achieved his main goal in game development. His first game as director, Drakengard (2003), let him create almost everything as he wanted.
“I’m done with working. I don’t want to do it anymore,” Taro said of his future plans.
He has considered retiring, believing his savings and pension could support him. He worries about developing dementia as he ages. When work frustrates him, he tells himself continuing could help keep his mind active.
