The US services sector is again signaling stagflation: ISM Services PMI rose +0.1 point in July, to 54.1, while the employment index dropped -3.6 points, to 47.4, the lowest reading since March and back in contraction territory. This is also the 2nd-lowest reading since October and marks the 4th monthly contraction over the last 5. At the same time, the prices paid index surged +2.6 points, to 70.3, near the highest since October 2022. Prices paid have now trended higher for over 2 years, rising +16.9 points since March 2024. In other words, the economy is increasingly under pressure from both rising prices and a weakening labor market. The threat of stagflation is intensifying.

The US manufacturing recovery is accelerating: ISM Manufacturing PMI rose +2.3 points in July, to 55.6, the highest since May 2022. This marks the 7th consecutive monthly expansion. Since December 2025, the index has surged +7.7 points, the biggest increase since the 2020 pandemic recovery. This comes as new orders rose +0.7 points, to 56.7, the 3rd-highest since February 2022, pointing to further strength ahead. At the same time, the employment index jumped +3.1 points, to 52.8, the highest since August 2022, marking the first monthly expansion since January 2025. Meanwhile, prices paid fell -1.9 points, to 71.1, the lowest since February, posting the 3rd consecutive monthly decline by a total of -13.5 points. Manufacturing activity is gaining momentum.

China’s economy is losing momentum: China's manufacturing PMI fell -1.1 points in July, to 49.2, one of the lowest readings since 2023. This also marks the first reading below 50 since February, signaling contraction in the sector. At the same time, non-manufacturing PMI, measuring construction and services activity, declined -1.2 points, to 49.0, the lowest since December 2022. Construction PMI alone dropped 2.0 points, to 47.0 points, the lowest since the 2020 pandemic. On top of this, China’s GDP growth slowed to just +4.3% YoY in Q2 2026, the weakest expansion since Q4 2022. China’s slowdown is spreading across its economy.
