Tensions between Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia have sharply escalated, with Houthis of attempting to target Mecca with a drone. Saudi air defences intercepted and destroyed the drone south of the holy city on September 15, before it entered restricted airspace, according to the Saudi-led coalition. Saudi officials called the security of Mecca and Muslim pilgrims a “red line.” The Houthis, however, denied targeting Mecca or any Islamic holy site. The incident comes amid a series of Houthi attacks on Saudi targets and renewed Saudi-led strikes in Yemen, raising fears of a wider regional escalation.
